• Medical – Most recently, vaccines needed to be shipped at extremely low temperatures. Blood and plasma shipments need to be kept at low temperatures so that those vital, life-saving fluids aren’t allowed to spoil.
• Food – Every day, millions of kilos of food are dumped out because it was allowed to get too warm. Frozen foods have thawed. Refrigerated foods have been allowed to spoil. In the past, the temperature was monitored by drivers, shippers, grocery store clerks, and restaurant employees in the food chain. They would write down the temperature on a clipboard. Sometimes they’d write it down wrong. Other times, because they were busy, they might simply make it up entirely. If the temperature was off a little, but they were in a hurry, they might change it to an acceptable temperature, so they didn’t need to stop and call a technician.

Using electronic cold chain sensors that send a continual stream of data to a monitoring software program, it’s much easier for stakeholders to see how the food is treated and how where the problem lies. The software can even be set to alert managers of a problem. If a cargo container loses power and the temperature begins to rise, an SMS or email message can be sent to interested parties, so the issue can be fixed immediately.
